Illinois Adopt-A-Highway Program
Your Safety is our highest priority.
Please comply with the following rules and guidelines
- The Illinois Department of Transportation determines the acceptance or
rejection of applications for highway adoption
- Only volunteers that have viewed the safety
video should participate in litter pickups
- Notify your Adopt-A-Highway regional Coordinator
prior to pickups
- Participants must be at least 10 years old. One
adult should be present for every five children
- No pets allowed at pick up sites
- Stay off of pavement surfaces during pickups
- Park vehicles off the pavement and do not park
on curves, bridge decks, near or under overpasses or
in medians
- Uncover warning signs at the start of the pickup
and replace cover when pick up is finished
- Do not consume or be in possession of alcoholic
beverages or controlled substances
- Report any hazardous objects to your
Adopt-A-Highway Regional Coordinator

- Place filled bags near Adopt-A-Highway signs
- Submit valuables found to your Adopt-A-Highway
Regional Coordinator to be returned to owner or
authorities
