Since 1983, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT’s)
Audit Section has saved tax payers of the State of Illinois over $123
million in cost savings as a result of its efforts to audit both Federally
and State funded projects and grants [Audit
Section Cost Savings FY83-FY05]. Since 2003, the Audit Section has
provided audit coverage to over $1.6 billion in IDOT project costs, issued
over 2,500 audit reports and provided the State of Illinois with over
$23,812,175 in cost savings. [Audit

The preponderance of audit work is concentrated in providing
audit coverage to consultant overhead and cost audits, railroad overhead and
cost audits, utility cost audits, joint construction progress reviews,
engineering consultant contract proposal reviews, single audit reviews,
public transportation grants and various overhead rate audits for IDOT, the
Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Cook County Highway
Department, the City of Chicago Department of Water Management and the City
of Chicago Bureau of Electricity. The Audit Section also provides audit
coverage to numerous other types of projects and grants pursuant to
management requests. In addition, the Audit Section provides cooperation and
assistance to both Federal and State law enforcement authorities during the
investigation of fraudulent and illegal acts involving contractors and
vendors. The Audit Section also acts as a liaison for the Department during
reviews performed by the Illinois Office of the Auditor General and the
Illinois Office of Internal Audit (IOIA). The IOIA is responsible for the
performance of all internal audits performed for IDOT and all state agencies
under the authority of the governor. |
