Frequently Asked Questions

NOTICE: All class and re-test attendees are responsible for providing their own class materials, which includes a current copy of the Documentation Guide, Documentation Appendix and Workbook. These materials are available for download on the Class Materials page. No materials will be provided at events.

What time does the registration officially start on the 'Registration begins' date?
Registration requests are accepted beginning at 12:01am on the 'Registration begins' date. All requests received are time and date stamped and processed in the order in which they were received.

How many spaces are available in each class?
The number of consultant spaces allotted for each class typically depends on where the class is being held and whether there are any full-time IDOT personnel already enrolled for that particular class date. Although there is a "Registration Ends" date that appears on the web site, due to extremely high demand for this class, capacity is often reached within the first 1/2 day that enrollment is open. IDOT reserves the right to limit registration requests for individual agencies.

What time does registration close on the 'Registration End's date?
Although there is a "Registration Ends" date that appears on the web site, due to extremely high demand for this class, capacity is often reached within the first 1/2 day that enrollment is open. If for some reason demand is not high, registration will remain open until 11:59PM of the "Registration Ends" date for that class as shown on the web site.

Why are there two types of classes (Consultant and Local Agency) and what is the difference between them?
Although all Documentation classes are hosted by the Bureau of Construction, follow the same curriculum and are taught by the same instructors, the registration process differs.

All Local Agency personnel are required to register for classes through the Bureau of Local Roads and Streets, Technology Transfer Center T2 Training Program. Local Agency classes give first priority to local agency personnel (city, county, etc.).

All Consultants are required to register for classes through the Bureau of Construction.

How long is my certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for 4 years.

Can I renew my certificate without retaking the class?
Yes. A person certified can retake the Documentation exam once up to 6 months prior to expiration to re-certify without retaking the class. Once a certificate has expired or if the individual fails the re-test, the individual must attend the class to become certified again. It is each individual's responsibility to re-test prior to expiration and no notification of expiration will be sent by the Department. No exceptions will be made.

What is the fee for this class?
Although the demand for this class is high, there is no charge at this time. We ask that you cancel your registration 7 days in advance if you are unable to attend so that we may fill your space. Failure to cancel at least 7 days prior to the class date or failure to send an alternate attendee will affect your ability to register for subsequent classes.

What should I study to prepare for the test?
The Documentation Guide, which is found in the Construction Manual. A copy of the Construction Manual can be purchased from our Manual Sales office or you can download the Documentation Guide from the Class Materials page.

*An online copy of the Construction Manual is now available.

Should I register for class and re-test at the same time?
No. A certification test is given at the end of each class. Re-test dates are provided for students who were unsuccessful in obtaining certification at a recent class or for individuals who want to re-certify prior to expiration.

How do I know if I'm registered for class after I send my request?
Confirmation letters will be sent within 7 business days via email, fax or US Mail, depending upon the information provided on the registration form. Individuals are held responsible for their attendance, therefore correspondence is sent to the individual attendees, not their employers.
If the class is full and you were not registered we will also send you notification

How do I know if I’m on a waiting list?
Individuals will receive confirmation (via email, fax or US Mail, depending upon the information provided on the registration form) of being placed on a waiting list within 7 business days and will only be notified if a space becomes available. YOU WILL NOT BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST UNTIL THE CLASS REGISTRATION BEGINS. Waiting lists do not transfer - they are for specific events only

Can I have a copy of my test?
No, tests are not distributed. If you would like to discuss your test, contact us at cbctraining@dot.il.gov. Grades are not negotiable and will not be changed.

What do I need to bring to class?
Confirmation letter, calculator, pencils, a valid photo ID, the current version of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Documentation Guide, Appendix and Workbook. The Documentation Guide, Appendix and Workbook can be downloaded from the Class Materials page. No materials will be provided at events.

Where can I get a copy of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction?

A copy of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction can be purchased from our Manual Sales office. No copies are available at the classes or the re-tests.

Can I buy a copy of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction at the class?

No. You must bring one with you.

How many Professional Development Hours can I earn by taking Documentation class?
Professional Development Hours are awarded based on successful completion of a course and the amount of participation time.

Individuals earn 17 PDH's for attending Documentation class and passing the certification test. If unsuccessful in obtaining certification during class, you may re-test once. Upon passing, a Documentation Certificate and PDH's will be awarded. If the second attempt is unsuccessful, no certificate or PDH's will be given.

Individuals that choose to re-test within 6 months prior to expiration rather than taking the class will not be awarded PDH's, even if they do pass the certification test.
