  ROUTE 66 TOWANDA BRIDGE

In the mid 1990's, a project was initiated to replace the bridge carrying old U.S. 66 over Money Creek north of Towanda. Since the old southbound lanes were no longer being used, IDOT originally proposed to replace the old northbound bridge (which now carried all traffic), and to remove the old southbound bridge. Mr. Fred Walk, a teacher at Normal Community High School, contacted IDOT with a proposal to save the bridge in conjunction with an enhancement/preservation project he was working on with some of his students. Although the bridge was not suitable for continued vehicular traffic, it was deemed safe for bicycles and pedestrians, and the bridge was left in place where it now serves as part of a recreational path.
