U.S. 34

US 34 from Gletty Road in Sandwich to Chilton Way in Plano is a project to improve the existing two-lane highway. The project involves the study of US 34 from west of Gletty Road through downtown Sandwich to Chilton Way in Plano. This is approximately a distance of 4 miles and includes two counties, DeKalb and Kendall; and two communities: Sandwich and Plano. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has identified that traffic volumes in this corridor are at or near the capacity of the existing roadway and that rapid development and lack of alternate routes will continue to increase the demand on the state highway system.

Alternatives considered include widening to accommodate two lanes in each direction and a one-way couple. A preferred alternative to widen the existing alignment was selected based on engineering studies and CSS input. While the project presented two practical and feasible alternatives, the CSS process identified strong community support for one of the options.
