| The original bridge was built in the early 1950's;
this stucture was over 600 feet in length and
spanned the I&M Canal and a railroad. In the 1990's,
a bridge superstructure replacement was warranted.
Design work was coordinated with several agencies,
including the City of La Salle , the Canal Corridor
Association, the Illinois Department of Natural
Resources, and the Illinois Historical Preservation
Agency. The city participated in the addition of
decorative “gas light” type light poles. A sidewalk
was added on the west side of the bridge and beyond
the south end of the bridge. This sidewalk gave
access to the Lock 14 area, which was previously
inaccessible by persons with disabilities. |
