This project redesigned the first rest area that
travelers encounter on I-70 as they enter Illinois going
west. IDOT therefore wanted to create a facility with
some distinction, leaving a good impression on travelers
and providing a “gateway” feel for the state.
The pictures are of the retaining wall; the rest
area is located above. Even if travelers do not stop
at the rest area, they will have an opportunity to
see the wall.
The wall is designed to blend into the hilly,
rural nature of the surrounding area. Its treatment
mimics the look of the river bluffs in this area of
Illinois.
