For this project, IDOT and local agencies worked
together to construct a replica of a covered bridge that
stood at this spot in the 1800's. The original had been
replaced by a concrete bridge in the early 1900's.
The roadway , known as “Old US 40” and the concrete
bridge were originally set to be removed by IDOT. “New”
U.S. Route 40 stands only a few hundred yards away.
IDOT met with area stakeholders and found a desire to
keep the roadway for local use and to create the replica
bridge. The area has many historic buildings, and
includes the “ Village of Overhanging Porches ” tourist
area.
IDOT transferred the road to the County, identified
federal funds which could be used to build the bridge,
and helped design and build the bridge and roadway. It
is now used by both tourists and local residents for
scenic driving, hiking and bicycling.
