During a reconstruction of US 136/Ill 1 in Danville
, IDOT worked with both the city and individual
homeowners in the area to choose treatments for the
retaining walls adjoining their property.
These walls were necessary for engineering
purposes, but rather than use standard concrete
walls, IDOT helped choose various treatments that
fit the style of each nearby home.
This stone arch bridge shown in the last three
pictures is on the list of Historic Bridges in
Illinois . Originally slated for complete
replacement, concerns for preservation of this
historic structure led to an innovative concrete
liner design that allowed the basic structure to
remain intact. Structure integrity was improved to
withstand the loadings of modern trucks while
preserving the original stone work.
