Historic Route 66

This section of Historic US Route 66 is located in Sangamon County . The pavement is brick and was originally built in 1920. Over the years the pavement had been patched with a variety of materials and had degraded into a poor condition. Working with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, Route 66 Association, Historic Route 66 of Illinois and National Historic Route 66 Federation, it was decided to preserve this stretch of brick pavement. Two structures needed to be raised to prevent the roadway from flooding. The railings for these two structures were built to match the original construction. The original bricks were reused to build the raised pavement sections. A source of old paving bricks was used to fill in sections that had been patched and/or deteriorated to the extent the bricks were unusable. The completed project allows vehicles a chance to travel a section of US Route 66 as it would have been in the 1920's.
