Environmental
Reviews
Environmental Documents are provided for
by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). NEPA is our basic
national charter for protection of the environment. These documents
provide environment information to public officials and citizens before
decisions are made and before actions are taken.
NEPA documents provide full and fair
discussion of significant environmental impacts. They inform decision
makers and the public of the reasonable alternatives which would avoid
or minimize adverse impacts or enhance the quality of the human
environment. Documents are to be concise, clear and to the point, and
should be supported by evidence that the agency has made the necessary
environmental analyses. NEPA documents must concentrate on the issues
that are truly significant to the action in question, rather than
amassing needless detail.
The NEPA process is intended to help
public officials make decisions that are based on understanding of
environmental consequences, and take actions that protect, restore, and
enhance the environment. Accurate scientific analysis, expert agency
comments, and public scrutiny are essential to implementing NEPA.
