Existing Conditions
Much of the 12-miles of I-57 between the
Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) and I-80 is the original
concrete pavement that was first constructed when it opened
in the early 1970s.
With the exception of intermittent
concrete patching and limited resurfacing efforts, I-57 has
not undergone any major rehabilitation in over 30 years. As
a result, the roadway, and several bridges, are in need of
repair.
Planned Improvements
During 2002, the southbound lanes of
I-57 will be improved at a cost of $40.2 million. Similar
work will be done on the northbound lanes of I-57 in 2003.
The major planned improvements are:
- Complete resurfacing of 12-miles of
the mainline lanes of I-57, including the various entrance
and exit ramps within the project limits;
- Rehabilitation of I-57 bridges over
Vermont Road, Cal-Sag Channel, Broadway Street, Little
Calumet River, Thornton Road/Little Calumet River, 143rd
Street, Dixie Highway, 147th Street, and 149th Street;
- Improved safety.
