ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
BUREAU OF MATERIALS AND PHYSICAL RESEARCH
SPECIFICATIONS

Activities involving materials, research, and new products are administered by the Bureau of Materials and Physical Research (BMPR). Administration of these activities requires BMPR to develop new specifications or revise existing Department specifications. Since these activities are under development or are being evaluated, the specifications do not have a wide distribution. In addition, these specifications are a working document and have not been adopted as a statewide standard.

For a copy of the specification, to obtain information, or provide comments, please phone or e-mail the contact person. If you are unable to reach the contact person directly, please call 217/782-7200 for assistance.

Name of Specification: Hot-Mix Asphalt – Pay for Performance Using Percent within Limits – Jobsite Sampling (BMPR)
Application: This system is the most robust method of HMA acceptance and provides the most accurate measure of quality. It is the preferred method of acceptance for project on Interstate or Supplemental Freeways, Full-Depth HMA and large tonnage overlays.   To assure the accuracy of the statistical measure and consequent payment, the specifications should have a minimum of 8 mixture tests.  For this reason the specification is set up for a minimum size of HMA quantity over 8,000 tons.  However, where the most accurate measure of quality is desired, PFP should be considered for smaller projects.  As noted in the specifications, sub-lot size will need to be adjusted accordingly. This special provision should not be used on:  1.       Temporary pavements, patching, or shoulders unless they are used as auxiliary lanes.  2.       Applications where the mixture thickness is less than 3 times the nominal maximum aggregate size.

Name of Specification: Hot Mix Asphalt Mixture IL-9.5FG (BMPR)
Application: Fine graded 9.5 mm mixture is an alternative level binder and surface mixture featuring lower permeability and improved workability for higher density. When used as a level binder this mixture has a density requirement. Until more friction data is collected, this mixture should only be used as a surface mixture in low speed applications (i.e. ≤ 45 MPH).
