IDOT & CN Railroad Reach Agreement on the Construction of two Bridges in Lynwood and Aurora
Chicago-The Illinois Department of
Transportation (IDOT) announced today that it has reached an
agreement with CN Railroad and is moving forward with the
construction of two new bridges carrying US Route 30 (Lincoln
Highway) in Lynwood and US Route 34 (Ogden Avenue) in Aurora
over the CN/Elgin Joliet & Eastern (EJE) Railroad crossings.
In December of 2008, the Surface Transportation Board (STB)
ordered that bridges at these two locations would need to be
built as a condition of allowing CN to acquire the EJ&E Railway
Company. The STB stipulated that CN would be required to
participate in the funding of the bridges while IDOT would be
the lead agency responsible for constructing the bridges.
The agreement concluded months of planning and design relative
to the final bridge configuration at each location. The
Department is looking to initiate construction of these two
projects in the spring of 2014, with construction activities
anticipated to be substantially completed in the fall 2016. Once
completed, these improvements will significantly increase safety
and mobility, reduce congestion and improve traffic flow in and
around these two locations.
