State Agencies Host Information Fair for Veterans

Seeking Illinois Veterans to Fill Frontline Jobs for Snow and Ice Removal; Help Drivers in Distress

SPRINGFIELD– The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) along with other state government agencies and organizations are teaming up to make Illinois veterans aware of well-paying job opportunities as Highway Maintainers.

“We know that our veterans have risked their lives overseas to protect our way of life and keep our homeland safe,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig. “We want them to know there are also well-paying opportunities for them to serve right here at home, keeping our roads clear and safe for motorists.”

“The state of Illinois is a leader in taking care of veterans and providing job opportunities for those who have faithfully and courageously served our nation,” said Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Director Dan Grant. “We commend our colleagues at IDOT for their commitment to the employment needs of Illinois Veterans.”

The state is hosting Information fairs in the Chicago area on Monday, Feb 22nd at the Jesse Brown VA Center (820 South Damen Avenue) in Chicago and Feb 23rd at the Multi Purpose Center (200 Fifth Avenue) in Maywood. A third information fair will also take place Friday, Feb 26th at the Army National Guard Armory (2931 State Street) in East St. Louis. All fairs are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The starting salary for Highway Maintainers is $4,062 per month. Applications should be submitted to the state's hiring agency, the Department of Central Management Services (CMS), where applicants will also complete Civil Service testing.

The main requirement for Highway Maintainer jobs is possession of an Illinois Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License, with an endorsement “N” (tankers) or “X” (tankers with hazardous materials) and non-restricted air-brakes. Also required is a one year driving experience free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.

Among other duties, highway maintainers work out of IDOT maintenance yards and are required to drive and operate heavy duty maintenance trucks, plows and salt spreaders, tractors, mowers, pavement marking equipment and other heavy equipment, and to perform arduous manual labor. They are responsible for cleaning and clearing right-of-ways along IDOT highways and roads; and for patching and repairing roads and bridges as needed.

Interested candidates must take the Highway Maintainer test with CMS and go through an interview process for consideration to be placed on a list of eligible candidates. Candidates are also required to have a Commercial Driver’s License to take the test. Veteran’s preference does apply to the highway maintainer position.

Information about the application and testing process will be available at the information fairs. Employment applications are available online at: and in person at CMS, Capital City Center, 130 West Mason, Springfield, IL 62706. Information may also be obtained by phone at 217-557-6885.
