SPRINGFIELD , IL -- The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that highway construction work will be suspended, where possible, on state highways to give motorists a break for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Work zone areas will be opened for normal traffic patterns during the afternoon of Friday, July 2, and will remain open until midnight Monday, July 5.

However, there will be a number of work zones that will continue to have lane closures. Motorists are advised to slow down and be alert in those work zones, and are reminded that work zone speed limits are still in effect. The following Chicagoland expressways will have closures and lane restrictions:

I-55 from Stewart Ave. to Wentworth Ave. , Bridge Superstructure, Shoulder closure at the Stewart Street Bridge.

I-57 under Throop Street & 107th St. & Under Throop St. & at 107th Street , Bridge Superstructure Replacement. Shoulder and nighttime closures on I-57.

I-90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway from 31st Street to 71 st Street , Watermain Relocation. Trucks will detour off Wells onto the Dan Ryan (I-90/94) at 55 th Street and exit at 59 th St. back to Wells.

I-90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway from 47 th St. to 67 th Street , Storm Sewer Repairs. Shoulder repair along shoulders of express lanes and local lanes. Temporary barrier walls and crossovers in place.

I-90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway from 67 th -95 th Street, Storm Sewer Repairs. Ramps closed including: NB 83 rd St. entrance, NB 83rd St. entrance, NB 79th exit, SB 79th entrance, SB 83rd exit, There is also work on the frontage roads. State Street is closed between 79th and 83rd Streets. The CTA closed the SB at 83rd St. to renovate the Red Line.

I-90/94 Dan Ryan Exp. @ 67th Street , Bridge Fabrication. Lane Closures due to area projects at 47 th -67 th and 87 th St.

I-80/94 Kingery Exp. EB east of IL 394, Grading, drainage, tree removal, paving. Left and right shoulders are closed and there will be work on the ramps.

I-80/94/US 6 over I-80, Torrence Ave., IL 394, Bridge Replacement. Lane closures

I-94/I-394 under 170th St. under 170th Street, Bridge Replacement. Narrow EB and WB lanes on I-80/294, and nighttime lane closures near the state line.

US 34 intersection at Buda Road three miles south of Sheffield . Traffic restricted to one lane by the use of temporary traffic signals while the roadway is being removed and realigned.

Summer and holidays are typically peak travel times. The Department is asking motorists to help make this summer a safe travel season by doing the following:

• Give yourself more time to reach your destination by planning ahead.
• Keep enough distance between you and the motorists ahead of you.
• Always be prepared to stop.
• Buckle up while traveling.
• Don't drink and drive.
• Don't drive while you are tired.
• Always focus on your driving. Speed and driver distractions are the major causes of work zone crashes.

Additional State Police will be out patrolling to help keep this season a safe season. By working together and obeying the rules of the road lives will be saved.
