SPRINGFIELD, IL -- The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that highway construction work will be suspended, where possible, on state highways to give motorists a break for the Labor Day weekend.

Construction zones will be opened for normal traffic patterns during the afternoon of Friday, August 30, and will remain open until midnight Monday, September 2.

However, there will be a number of construction zones that will continue to have lane closures. Motorists are advised to slow down and be alert in those areas, and are reminded that reduced speed limits are still in effect.

In the greater Chicago area there will be work on the following expressways:

• I-57, lane reductions for 12 miles between Halsted Street in Chicago and I-80 near Country Club Hills.
  

• I-55 at the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), two ramps from southbound I-294 to northbound I-55 and to Joliet Road are closed, and the ramp from northbound I-55 to northbound I-294 is closed. Detours are posted.
  

• Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94), although all lanes are open northbound motorists may encounter backups because of construction on the Franklin Street Connector near Chinatown.

Other projects across the state that will continue to have lane closures are:

• US 24 eastbound (Quincy Memorial Bridge) over the Mississippi River, closed for rehabilitation. All traffic on Bayview Bridge in Quincy.

• I-57 at the Mississippi River Bridge at Cairo, bridge rehabilitation, southbound bridge closed, one lane in each direction on the northbound bridge.
  
• IL 127, 4 miles south of Tamms, bridge rehabilitation, one lane open controlled by traffic signals.

• I-80 between IL 78 (mile marker 33) and IL 40 (mile marker 45), bridge deck replacement on three sets of bridges, one lane open each direction.

• IL 78 at Carroll Creek in Mt. Carroll, road closed for bridge replacement. Traffic detoured on US 52, IL 73 and US 20.

• US 51 over a drainage ditch 5 miles north of Pana, bridge construction, one lane traffic controlled by signals.

• I-57 between mile markers 198 and 213, rehabilitation of 10 bridges, one lane open in each direction.

• I-70 between mile markers 145 and 154, pavement reconstruction, one lane open in each direction.

• US 14 from Hick Rd. to Lake-Cook Rd., pavement reconstruction, one lane open each direction.
  
• IL 58 from Barrington Rd. to Bartlett Rd. over Poplar Creek, culvert replacement, alternating one-way controlled by signals.
  
• IL 58 at Salt Creek, .75 of a mile east of IL 53, bridge repair, one lane open in each direction.
