The Illinois Department of Transportation has developed an extensive rest area system along our interstate highways for the convenience and safety of motorists.

Illinois has more than 2,000 miles of interstate highways, the third largest system in the nation. There are currently 53 rest area buildings in the Illinois’ rest area system. The rest areas are spaced approximately one-hour's driving time apart. There are 10 Welcome Centers staffed by tourism personnel to provide tourist and travel information.

All of our interstate rest areas provide modern buildings with restroom facilities, picnic areas, drinking water, information boards, telephones, security lighting and other amenities. Special services such as vending machines, teletypewriters for the hearing impaired and weather information are indicated for each rest area on this map.

The vending services are operated by Illinois licensed blind vendors in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Human Services. These facilities offer soft drinks, coffee, snacks, candy and other items.

Most of the rest area buildings and grounds are maintained through contract with sheltered workshops for disabled persons.

All of the rest areas have recycling stations for the convenience of our visitors. Please use the trash barrels and the recycling bins at the rest areas.

In addition to interstate highways there are toll highways in the Chicago area and across northern Illinois. These highways have oasis areas for food and fuel. The toll highways are under the jurisdiction of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.

Please consult an Illinois Official Highway Map for complete and detailed travel information. Winter road conditions and summer construction information are available at 800/452-IDOT. Illinois travel information can be obtained at 800/2CONNECT.
