 The Illinois SRTS Program supports projects and programs that enable and encourage walking and bicycling to and from school. The program applies to schools serving grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Safe Routes to School awards have been announced. The list of funded projects is linked on the left side of this page.  The Committee was impressed by the many wonderful projects that were submitted.  With almost 300 applications submitted and 1044 projects requesting $77.7 million, the process of scoring each project was intense.

Congratulations to those schools, communities and non-profit organizations that will receive Safe Routes to School funding from the 2007 application cycle.

Due to the large number of projects and the limited funding available, we were only able to fund a small number of projects.  If you do not see your project on the list, I encourage you to apply again this year.

The schedule for the 2008 SRTS Planning and Application cycle is tentatively set for the following dates:

  • May 1: Updated School Travel Plan available on website
  • June & July: Statewide training for SRTS – locations TBD 
  • August 1: Call for Projects (Applications) Opens
  • September 22 (5:00 pm):  Deadline to submit STP for Coordinator review & comment
  • September 30 (5:00 pm): Deadline for STP submittal (for all 2008 plans)
  • October 31 (5:00 pm): Call for Projects (Applications) Closes

Thank you all for your hard work and patience as we have worked through the inaugural SRTS planning and funding cycle.  It has been amazing to see the plans and ideas that you have had to increase the safety and number of students walking and bicycling in Illinois.
