The Illinois Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Program supports projects and programs that enable and encourage walking and bicycling to and from school. The program applies to schools serving grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. For more information on the program and its components, please view the links on the left side of the page.

The 2007 Safe Routes to School awards were announced in March of 2008, and the list of funded projects is linked on the left side of this page. Congratulations to those schools, communities and non-profit organizations that will receive Safe Routes to School funding from the 2007 application cycle. Please visit the Success Stories link on this site to learn about some of these great projects, as well as other successful SRTS projects across Illinois!

The 2008 SRTS applications were due in December of 2008. The list of participants with approved School Travel Plans is available in the FAQ section. From those participants, we are pleased to announce that we received applications for almost 400 projects, totaling nearly $28 million. We have roughly $13,000,000 to award. Please be patient as we work through the applications and score all of the projects.

At this time, the timeframe for the 2009 SRTS planning and funding cycle has not been set, as SRTS funding is pending reauthorization in the next federal transportation bill. We strongly hope that we will have a 2009 funding cycle, and I strongly encourage you to begin (or update) the school travel plan for your School District or community. Once we have additional information on future funding for Safe Routes, we will plan the 2009 SRTS Statewide Training sessions, as well as a potential Statewide Illinois SRTS Conference.

Thank you all for your hard work and patience as we completed the inaugural SRTS planning and funding cycle and as we have begun the 2008 planning and funding cycle. It has been amazing to see the plans and ideas that you have had to increase the safety and number of students walking and bicycling in Illinois. It is clear that SRTS is catching on in your schools and communities!
